Highlands Hammock State Park: A look at natural areas weed control

Highlands Hammock State Park: A look at natural areas weed control

About this event

Heartland CISMA is planning a tour to Highlands Hammock State Park, located in Sebring, Florida, for a tour of invasive species treatments on natural lands.

The goal of this field trip is to identify recent successes with invasive species control within Highlands Hammock.

We will visit a unit that has had initial or follow-up treatments within 2025 and examine the success. We will then visit a site that is planned for treatment and perform a thought exercise wherein the group determines the treatment needs.

This is meant to highlight success, calibrate treatments, and help keep all of us up-to-date with the latest management practices.

When?

The trip is scheduled for October 23rd, starting at 10am. We expect to finish by 2pm, but all are welcome to stay longer and experience the state park.

Where?

Highlands Hammock State Park. Meeting location on site to be determined.

What to bring!

  • Field clothing: We are expected to be outside, so please wear appropriate clothing for field work. Long pants, sleeved shirts, boots, hats, sunscreen, and insect repellent are highly recommended. Be advised that areas may have standing water.
  • Food and drink: Food and drink are BYOB. Please bring enough water to stay hydrated and enough snacks to stay full. Highlands Hammock has a vendor that sells food and drinks.
  • Accessories: We recommend bringing a camera and a notepad.
